Kale & Kettle – restaurant review
Buns and salad boxes have replaced fixie bikes in this corner of Stokes Croft, as Kale & Kettle take over from Bristol Dropouts who have moved to Church Road in Redfield.
This new vegetarian restaurant has just three items on its menu alongside katzu fries, homemade cakes (lemon drizzle and chocolate cake on a recent lunchtime), and tea and coffee.
It’s one of the shortest menus in Bristol: 1) akkras in a bun, 2) noodle pot and 3) salad box. Each option costs £6 and can be eaten in of taken away.
is needed now More than ever
My akkras (African black eye pea fritters) in a bun was served in the plastic container familiar to customers of Bagel Boy.
There were three akkras the size of large pakoras between soft and pillowy buns which were still warm. And then of course the kale; sesame kale slaw in this case with citrus aioli. A healthy and lip-smackingly gorgeous combination.
Kale & Kettle offers one of the best people watching opportunities on Stokes Croft with a panoramic vantage point stretching from the 51 02 building to the top of City Road.
In fact, as people wandered or cycled past, I felt as much on show as them, being positioned on a bar stool on a long wooden table in the large front window.
The A-board outside gives a website and an Instagram address and this place is as Instagram friendly as they come. Think plain whitewashed walls, tin flowerpots overflowing with greenery hanging from the ceiling, and daffodils and tulips artfully arranged in old milk bottles.
Even the colanders, pots and pans in the small open kitchen are positioned as if posing for an Instagram still life, with no filter required.
