Pipal Tree – restaurant review

By Paul Hassan  Tuesday Jun 27, 2017

Discreetly located between two of BS5’s more idiosyncratic hostelries, The Chelsea Inn and The Plough Inn, Pipal Tree is the very latest offering in Easton’s high-end but affordable dining.

Inspired by the tree that gave shelter to the Buddha, this quaint restaurant is a labour of love. It has been carefully designed, and is expertly delivered, by experienced culinary husband and wife team, Kulwinder Kaur and Kirpal Singh, both Easton born and bred.

They were determined to bring the authentic home cooked experience of their Bristolian-Punjabi upbringing to a much wider audience.

While brunch served everyday from 10am-4pm is a fascinating fusion of British and Indian flavours, it is really the evening menu that provides a series of surprising and unique signature dishes that you simply won’t get anywhere else.

Kirpal’s dad’s own favourite dish is the free-range pheasant breast. Pan cooked, it is marinated in a home-made tandoori paste with a red wine and cream sauce, with mixed bell peppers, onions, tomatoes and mushrooms, and served with Punjabi aloo.

I opted for the lamb subji, which arrived as described on the menu: tender, and cooked in a rich courgette-based sauce.

It was accompanied by a delicious organic rice and vegetable dish, aloo matar chawl, and the taste and texture of the lamb perfectly complemented it.

As you would expect these days in Easton, the fayre is strictly organic with vegetarians and vegans amply catered for.

The Pipal Tree exudes a warm cozy atmosphere, with easy-listening traditional Punjabi background music and a small team of attentive but not intrusive young local waiters.

As Kirpal predicts: “We look forward to providing Punjabi cuisine that has a unique British fusion flavour to the people of Easton, and, in time to come, perhaps to the whole of Bristol, and beyond.”
