‘Thai-inspired tapas’ restaurant and bar coming soon
A team of experienced restaurateurs are coming together to offer “a fresh new take on Thai food” in a new restaurant on Cotham Hill.
Mangosteen, which is named after the purple national fruit of Thailand, promises “a warm, energetic atmosphere, a loaded food menu, a unique and original Thai-inspired cocktail list”.
Business owners Kedar Subedi, Amit Kumar and chef Devi Gurung say they have created a “modern, tapas-style” menu of small plates such as Masamaan and Panang curries, noodles, rice, salads and Tom Yum soup.
is needed now More than ever
Replacing what used to be Pasta Loco, much of the emphasis will be on seafood and for drinks there will be cocktails, smoothies and teas.
The new restaurant’s aim is for diners to be able to order a mix of dishes to share and enjoy listening to a vinyl-only sound system.

Kumar and Subedi have years of experience in Bristol’s hospitality industry
“We hope the vibe will be fun and fast-paced, noisy and intimate with noise from the kitchen,” said project manager Ed Sargent.
“We describe it as a fresh new take on Thai food as all the Thai restaurants I’ve been to, although the food has been great, the restaurant itself has been a bit dated and old fashioned.
“I don’t think anyone in Bristol has brought a modern, vibey approach to Thai food before like we are.”
Subedi, the chef and owner behind Golden Crane bar, Harbour Hub and Rocksalt, said: “Devi, our head chef, is an expert in Thai food having worked in a lot of Thai restaurants.”
Stand-out dishes will be the soft shell crab, a whole sea bass wrapped in banana leaves and grilled and a papaya and chilli salad.
There will also be “some really cool cocktails, lots of interesting non-alcoholic things available like tropical fruit smoothies and jasmine tea”.
Explaining the concept, Sargent added: “After opening other venues, we quickly worked out what people actually wanted to do was order loads of food and then share it on the table.
“Families and groups of students seem to like that and it seems to be the way the street is going with the likes of Bravas.”
Restaurant manager Loki Stokes added: ”I am so excited to be involved with this new project. Having worked in hospitality for years, it will be great to add to Cotham Hill’s interesting restaurants and cafes.
“I hope we can help to accentuate the street’s reputation and that we bring excitement and happiness to residents and visitors”.
Mangosteen will open in early February.
