The Last Word – restaurant/bar review

By Ri Meredith  Friday Jul 5, 2019

Offering champagne brunch during the day and cocktails and wine by night, The Last Word fits comfortably into its location in Clifton Village.

On a recent Tuesday evening, owner Tomas was welcoming new customers through the doors of the former restaurant Shop 3 Bistro.

What seems like a small bar as you enter is spread across three floors, with the downstairs lounge looking like the best place to share a bottle of wine, if you can decide on one from their list of around 60.

Before the food though, it was time for a couple of cocktails. The Last Word’s espresso martini is made with a coffee tequila that was dangerously delicious. For those that are more sweet-toothed, a Blueberry Aviation was sweet, jazzy and tasted just like Parma Violets sweets.

After perusing the dinner menu, we opted for a couple of sharing plates; a meat platter (£19.95) and a cheeseboard (£12.50).

The range of meats – including braised crispy pork belly, za’atar chicken thigh and spicy mmoked Polish sausages – and locally sourced cheeses, with some toasted sourdough was more than enough to fill a hole.

With the promise of an introduction of small plates to their evening menu soon, the sharing boards provided a great taste of what’s to come.

During the day, their brunch and afternoon tea menus include classics such as avocado and crispy egg toast or a jaunty barbecue squid salad.

Finding ourselves unable to decide on which cocktail to finish with, Tomas took our taste fancies and created a drink he thought we would enjoy. A pink grapefruit, mango and gin concoction proved itself to be even tastier than the espresso martini.

For Cliftonites who brunch and lunch, The Last Word could become a popular new all-day opening in their midst.
