New shop selling cheese and beer to open on Whiteladies Road

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Jul 17, 2018

Cheese and beer. It’s a winning combination. And for Lara Issa and Dom Pulsford, it will soon become a way of life with the opening of their new shop, Cheese & Beer, on Whiteladies Road.

Located between Tradewind Espresso and Boots, the site was most recently an off licence but has been empty for eight years.

“We walked in and straight away we knew,” said Dom, with builders currently transforming the empty space into a shop that will also have seating for around a dozen people inside.

South West and UK beers and cheeses will always be on sale, with Lara and Dom also looking further afield at the likes of European cheeses and US craft beer.

The married couple met while working in London and have moved to Bristol to launch their business.

Dom previously worked for Mitchells & Butlers pub company. When he left there, he spent time learning the cheese trade at Neal’s Yard Dairy in Borough Market, who will be initially supplying the cheese for the new shop.

Lara, who was born in Palestine and grew up in Spain and Switzerland, will be the beer specialist, with the plan of having three beers always on tap and events such as meet the brewer sessions.

Matching the food and drink will be a key aim for the pair, “putting two flavours together that create a third” as Lara explains.

Lara and Dom hope to have Cheese & Beer open in time for the Bristol Craft Beer Festival in September.

“We’re just ready to get going now,” Lara said. “We want to be able to introduce people to new experiences.”
