Deals of the Week, August 22-28

By Stefan Wriggle  Thursday Aug 18, 2016

Here are this week’s independent food and drink deal picks from our food and drink partner Wriggle

For those not in the know, Wriggle is a local startup whose goal is to help Bristolians discover and save money at quality independent food & drink establishments – and help great local businesses get the customers they deserve. Each of the offers only has a limited quantity and is only available for a specific day – so make sure you get a Wriggle on!

The Apple – Happy-Hour Cider, You Say?
Usual price: £3.90
With Wriggle: £2.50

What?
Do you like Cider? Yes? Well, you won’t want to miss this windfall. Scrumpy yourself any pint of cider from any of the Apple’s Bars (see their blackboard for a great choice of available house favourites) and let the evening begin. At £2.50 for your first pint of the night through Wriggle, we’re pretty sure that this is the best value beverage you’ll find in the centre of Bristol. Gert Lush and get on.

Where?
You’ll be hard-pressed to find anywhere closer to the hearts (and palates) of local cider connoisseurs. A floating institution, The Apple gently bobs alongside its own cobbled expanse on the Welsh Back, awash with friendly clientele and proudly serving real cider from an astounding assortment of bottles, barrels and boxes. It oozes character (think canvas covering on the top deck and a salubrious sofa retreat down below), and is proud of its product: proper cider, craft-produced and organic. The ploughman’s lunches are a must (premium local ingredients heartily served with subtlety and poise), and sampling an Old Bristolian (by the half pint, mind) verges on a rite of passage before setting foot back on dry land. Even if you can’t walk on water, you’ll definitely run on this cider, so get a Wriggle on.

Soul Fish – Cod & Chips & Sauce & Peas & Pud for 2
Usual price: £20
With Wriggle: £12

What?
Whale, whale, whale. What do we have here? Cod, Chips, any homemade sauce, minted or mushy peas and deep fried Oreos for 2. Lovely job.  Check out their great selection of Moor Beer cans while you’re there, and some delicious house wine too.

Where?
Stuart and Vashti Seth travelled the world together and experienced some amazing food, but there was one dish that they loved and ordered whenever they could – The UK’s favourite meal. Fish & Chips. After cooking for Royalty, Madonna, and even the Dalai Lama, Stuart decided it’s time to put the soul back into the dish that we just can’t get enough of, so in 2015 Soul Fish was born. Whether it’s their ethical outlook, double cooked chips or sustainably caught fish. There’s just something darn good about their Fish & Chips

PAPER Café – Any Sandwich / Baguette + Any Coffee
Usual price: £6.50
With Wriggle: £4.20

What?
Any home-made baguette or sandwich and a coffee of your choosing. Perfect for a leisurely café lunch, an on-the-go bite or (if you’re office bound) something slightly more al-desko. The coffee is great, and there are are a range of delicious sarnie fillings to choose from: Think Avocado, Hummus and Tomato or perhaps Beetroot, Goats Cheese and Tzatziki on Wholemeal Bloomer bread. Leaning towards a baguette instead? You won’t go wrong with the Stilton, Apple & Pear Chutney in Malted Wheat.

Where?
If – like us – you’re weary of Big Brand Coffee, PAPER Café will perk you right up. This Broadmead based independent promises a great coffee experience (both in taste and customer service) and a genuine escape from the identikit chains you’d usually associate with a city-centre shopping hotspot. Step inside after a hum-drum mooch down the Horsefair and you’ll discover an oasis of design, window-light and space – run by a friendly team of dedicated, independently minded Baristas, committed to serving quality caffeine and fantastic café food right from the get-go. Whitewashed walls provide an ideal backdrop for the café to exhibit a dependably fantastic and ever-rotating selection of local artwork, and the adjoining CO-LAB (a creative shop for local independents) is a consistent joy if you feel like losing yourself in some community-minded retail therapy. As perfect for a light lunch as it is for a carefree coffee break, if you spend a bit of time in Broadmead then we think you should definitely spend a lot of time in PAPER Café.

Kaedama – Japanese Ramen (v/m) & Extra Toppings* (BYO)
Usual price: £8
With Wriggle: £6

What?
It begins with a garlic ginger soy sauce tare (“ta-reh” – the seasoning which defines the Ramen, in this case ‘Shoyu’), in their rich and creamy chicken & miso broth (or tofu and seaweed for vegetarians). Buckwheat soba noodles lead the show – starring alongside slices of Chashu, a marinated egg, toasted seaweed, pickled ginger, bamboo shoots and spring onions – with the home recipe burnt garlic sesame oil giving a powerful finish. Add 2 extra toppings (except extra meat or tofu).

Where?
Fresh on the scene. Brought to you by our friends Alwin & Christine, Kaedama is a Bristol based ramen restaurant pop up bringing you an authentic bowl of ramen with a twist. This is their first commercial venture in the fabulous Mockingbird Cafe in Clifton, where you can expect a stripped back Ramen menu, with an array of extra toppings and, crucially, BYO!
