Wriggle Introduces: Mockingbird

By Stefan Wriggle  Thursday Jun 30, 2016

In this series, our Food & Drink Partner, Wriggle, introduce their favourite foodie places around Bristol – along with some upcoming offers for you to try them out. Up this week is the Mockingbird Cafe.

Mockingbird Cafe
58 Alma Vale Roadd, Bristol BS8 2HS

There’s scarcely a more pleasant way to spend a lazy few hours in Bristol than in the Mockingbird Cafe – particularly if you can bag yourself one of the large, sunlit window-seats for a lazy Saturday morning brunch or mid-week lunch. This beautiful Clifton cafe, nestled on Alma Vale Road, provides something a bit different to the typical cafe-fare you might find across Bristol. Here it’s about Deep-South US style home cooking, delivered in a beautiful, light and airy space with plenty of foliage.

Owned and run by Oliver, an Englishman with a passion for the US (his wife is from Mississippi, where he travelled for some time, and he regularly cooks wearing a star-spangled bandana) – the food is lovingly prepared by a small and friendly team. If you’re there for brunch, try out the Buttermilk Biscuit – packed with egg and cheese soufflé, sausage and bacon (if wanted) and home-made Spicy Beans (outstanding) – a refreshing and moreish change to the standard Full English – which goes perfectly with the house special Mississippi mud coffee (Extract Coffee’s Dr Strangelove Coffee served with a touch of condensed milk – which I dare you not to down in one and re-order instantly). The lunchtime menu has revolving specials, currently including a hearty brisket and grilled cheese sandwich.

This truly is a hidden gem. Great grub at reasonable prices and absolutely lovely folks. It’s also Sam from Wriggle’s favourite brunch spot in the whole of Bristol (high praise for a man who appreciates a brunch), so you’ll have to wrestle him for that window seat.

Want to try it out? Mockingbird has created a few offers on Wriggle for the next few days, to allow you to give them a go. Click below to bag one of the spots:
