Monday-July 3: Feeling, Hearing & Dancing with Colour Exhibition by Laurel Smart, The Mount Without
Laurel has been painting all her life but only concentrating on Abstract Expression for the last five years. She has developed a distinctive style which has it’s roots in the quality of the paint, mark making and, most importantly, the emotional impact of colour.
Laurel works large, the canvas is her landscape. Every inch of space is carefully considered and populated with loose, energetic marks. Her works mostly sing and dance, but sometimes they are quieter and just hum.

Tuesday: Dark Alchemy Presents: Dead Space Chamber Music, The Mount Without
Dead Space Chamber Music are an experimental early music quartet of voice, guitar, cello and drums from Bristol UK. They reinterpret historical material, particularly from the medieval and Renaissance periods, taking forms and melodies that are hundreds of years old and shapeshifting them into highly emotive and atmospheric contemporary works.
The band has earned enthusiastic reviews for their shows having previously supported The Danse Society, Cold in Berlin and Rose McDowell. In November 2022 they joined hackedepicciotto (Alexander Hacke of Einstürzende Neubauten and Danielle de Picciotto of Crime & The City Solution) on the UK dates of their European tour. In May 2023 they will hit the road as a duo of voice / guitar to join virtuoso cellist and composer Jo Quail on her upcoming UK tour.

Tuesday: Bristol Beacon Presents: Oscar Blue, Crofters Rights
Influenced at a formative age by the passion and integrity of Irish folk icons such as Damien Dempsey and the contemporary indie/rock sound of bands like Snow Patrol, Oscar Blue is an emerging artist with a passion for storytelling. Invoking an unsuspectingly familiar sense of belonging, attachment and nostalgia, Oscar’s songwriting transports listeners to some other place or feeling, meditating on his experience of life in an instinctively honest and uninhibited style. Following a run of debut singles in 2018, recorded on a shoestring budget in a small home recording studio, Oscar’s sound evolved to incorporate soaring guitar riffs, meandering soundscapes and spell-binding bass and percussive elements. This new direction culminated in the release of his debut EP, Backyard Mafia, which lead the Co. Clare native to landing national radio play, supports slots with internationally acclaimed acts such as Kodaline and KAWALA, and even sold out headline shows in Dublin and London. Support comes from Bristol-based artist Purpl.
Tuesday: Inna Wi Carnival Cinema, Trinity Centre
In preparation for the weekend’s carnival festivities, the team behind the celebration are hosting a day of independent film screenings in the Old Market church, telling the story of the carnival and its origins, along with discussions on these topics from Cables & Cameras.

July 15: Bristol Beacon Presents: Tinariwen, SWX
Formed in 1979 on the borders of Mali and Algeria, Tinariwen are world renowned as pioneers of the assouf style (“nostalgia” in tamashek). They address Tuareg people’s preoccupations in songs that mix traditional West African and Arab music with blues, folk and other influences. Tinariwen singlehandedly invented a guitar style that has captured the world’s imagination. They call it ishumar or assouf. The rest of the planet has come to know it as the Tuareg blues. Its music that is imbued with sorrow and longing but it’s also music for forgetting our cares and for dancing. Far more than just a rock band, Tinariwen are ambassadors for their people and a way of life in tune with the natural world that is under threat as never before. Their message has never sounded more urgent and compelling than it does now. Since gaining international recognition in the early 2000s, they have played more than 1100 shows around the world and released nine studio albums, three of them nominated for a Grammy, including Tassili, which won the award for Best World Music album in 2012.
