How to celebrate your life together in Bristol
Bristol offers a colourful and unconventional city in which to celebrate your life together. The largest city in the southwest of England has won the coveted title of Best City to Live in Britain and is home to internationally renowned museums as well as excellent pubs, coffee shops and hotels so that you can create more memories together. Here are just a few ideas.
Where to stay
Bristol offers a broad range of romantic places to stay. The luxury Brooks Guesthouse Bristol is in the heart of the city, as is the sumptuous Hotel Du Vin where you can relax as you consider what to do for your anniversary in the city. For a Harbourside stay, the Bristol Hotel is perfectly situated for romantic strolls along the waterfront or consider the Bristol Marriott Royal Hotel at the bottom of Park Street. Clifton is considered a genteel Bristol neighbourhood and Number 38 Clifton is a beautiful guesthouse that is close to local attractions, or for a fabulous view, consider the Avon Gorge Hotel.
Clifton Suspension Bridge
An icon of Bristol, the Clifton Suspension Bridge, designed by Brunel, is a masterpiece of design and engineering. Take the bus out to the bridge so that you can get an entire view of the Bristol waterfront skyline on your way. The observatory area near the Clifton bridge is worth a stop for a lovely view of the bridge itself. You can also walk across the vast open space of the Bristol Downs that runs all the way to the suspension bridge.
Tour the harbour by ferry
Once an important maritime trading post for tobacco, wine and cotton, Bristol harbour remains the heart of the city. There are markets, waterside bars and restaurants and more. You can take a cruise on the Bristol Packet, gliding past swans and the city’s various attractions, with commentary from a local and the opportunity of a pub lunch or cream tea. Another option is Bristol Ferry Boats which operates waterbus services daily, letting you jump on and off as you choose from Bristol Temple Meads train station to the SS Great Britain.
Bristol Breweries
If you like your craft beers, take a Bristol Beer Tasting Tour where a knowledgeable guide will take you around the Bristol brewery taprooms sampling a drink in each stop along the way. Or arrange your own visits to Moor Brewery, Good Chemistry, Arbor Brewery, Lost & Grounded, Wiper and True, Beer Emporium and Small Bar where you can learn more about the goods and enjoy a snifter too.
Shopping
Gloucester Road in Bristol is Europe’s longest shopping street full of independent retailers. This is one of the places to shop if you want to support Bristol’s sometimes eccentric, but aesthetically pleasing, indie traders. There is also CARGO at Wapping Wharf on Bristol’s harbourside where independent businesses are housed in a colourful cluster of shipping containers housing or St Nick’s Market at Stokes Croft, home to more local traders and to Biblos, an 18th-century Exchange building, the last remaining building of its kind in England. The adjoining Glass Arcade has a choice of eateries including traditional Bristol pie and gravy, but also global cuisine.
The Lido, Clifton, Bristol
