Drag artists celebrate Bowie’s legacy
Queer performers will celebrate David Bowie in an extra-special one-off drag event to mark the anniversary of his death in 2016.
Wig in a Box Productions will be joined by Punka to pay tribute to the gender-defying artist at Old Market Assembly on Saturday, January 12, two days after the world remembers the passing of one of Britain’s most enduring cultural icons.
The night features 10 performers who will take Bowie’s constantly evolving aesthetic and work as inspiration for an eclectic night of drag. Bowie’s androgyny and his otherworldly aesthetic make him one of the most significant artists of 20th-century queer expression.

Hosted by Bristol’s Dis Charge, the line-up features Manchester’s legendary Cheddar Gorgeous who says they will “embrace the goblin king” in their performance. Jareth the Goblin King was the name of Bowie’s character in the cult-classic musical sci-fi, Labyrinth.

The set list also features Delirium, Ruby Derriere, Oliver Assets, Maxx Decadence, Crayola Queen and newcomer Quiches Lorraine. Although much of the performances are still under wraps, Clare from Wig in a Box Productions did hint at some of what to expect.
“Delirium will be comically recreating a well known Bowie pastiche,” Clare says. Burlesque performer Ruby Derriere will be performing as a Ziggy-inspired drag king, while Quiches Lorraine will perform her own version of the Queen-Bowie duet of the 1981 song, Under Pressure.
As host, Dis Charge will sing live and has chosen to represent the darker and moodier side of Bowie’s back catalogue.
The night of performances is followed by an after-party hosted by Punka who will bring Bowie’s hits to life into the early hours. Wig in a Box is also really excited to be creating a cocktail for the night with Espensen spirits, using their fantastic gin Gin Genie and the first 20 people through the door will get a free taster.
Tickets are £12 and are available here.
