New night proves you can be queer without the beer

By Lowie Trevena  Thursday Oct 24, 2019

With substance use a well-known part of the LGBTQ+ community, environments to socialise in are often bars, clubs and parties.

Although spaces for queer people have diversified hugely in recent years, a new night hopes to make substance-free places to meet other LGBTQ+ people even more commonplace.

Club Soda, a national mindful drinking organisation, have held several LGBTQ+ alcohol-free nights across the country and are bringing the evening to Bristol on Monday, November 11 to celebrate the start of Alcohol Awareness Week.

The pop-up bar will be hosted in Adelina Yard

Hosted at Adelina Yard in partnership with Prism and Bristol Drugs Project, Queers Without Beers is for everyone in the community: whether you have never drunk, want to try a night out without alcohol or have actively quit.

The event is free to attend and will feature free tastings from Caleño, a local business and winner of the Great Bristish Food Awards 2019.

“We are thrilled about our new partnership with Club Soda, bringing the people of Bristol a new and fresh option around their drinking,” said BDP engagement manager Justin Hoggans.

There will be plenty of alcohol-free and low alcohol options available

The pop-up bar will introduce stock lots of alcohol-free and ultra-low alcohol drinks from the city and further afield, including Big Drop Brewing Co, Bristol Syrup Co and Drop Bear Beer Co.

“We are so excited that Queers Without Beers is going nationwide,” Club Soda Co-Founder Laura Willoughby MBE. “It is a great night out where everyone is welcome, whether you are just having a night off the booze or are alcohol-free.”
