A new LGBTQ+ space could be coming to Bristol

By Lowie Trevena  Tuesday Mar 9, 2021

A new project that is in the planning stages could lead to a brand-new space for the city’s LGBTQ+ community.

Six Bristol-based queer people have come together to create the community space, which they hope will add to a lacking LGBTQ+ scene in the city.

Max, Giuliana, Edwin, Marcin, Sharifa and Emmy are currently working with local queer people to ensure that the new space will be something that the community needs and wants.

“We noticed a lack of physical spaces for queers and so after having a year to reflect on it, we thought to ourselves why not just make one?” says Marcin, who lives in Bedminster.

“Many LGBT spaces in Bristol are for cis men and centred around alcohol and we think the community deserves an alternative.

“We want to create an inclusive and accessible community space where queer people can express themselves, socialise, learn, mobilise and play.”

The group hope that, by having a physical space specifically for LGBTQ+ people, the community’s sense of belonging will be increased.

The group are currently seeking a venue for the space and are in touch with other queer projects in the city to ensure they are not duplicating any of the work already being done.

The space will be community-led and hopes to operate on a “pay what you can” model. This will ensure the group is as accessible as possible. Marcin and the group are currently seeking funding and are considering a Crowdfunder.

“We want to see Bristol’s queer community becoming stronger in tackling social and environmental matters and increasing the resilience of those involved, whilst having fun,” says Marcin, who also encourages anyone with ideas for a name to come forward.

“We want the scene to be more inclusive, accepting, aware, caring and the city to become a beacon for all queers.”
