Bristol24/7 Queer Catch Up: Episode 1 – Queer Catch Up launches!
The first episode of Bristol24/7’s new LGBTQ+ podcast will look at bathrooms, queer venues and the remainder of LGBTQ+ History Month.
Kit Million Ross and Lowie Trevena host the podcast. Both are queer, non-binary people with a wealth of knowledge on Bristol’s LGBTQ+ scene. Kit studied a masters in documentary making at UWE Bristol and Lowie is the city’s only LGBTQ+ Editor.
Episode one will kick off with Kit giving a roundup of the latest news in and around Bristol, across the UK and globally.
is needed now More than ever
Lowie and Kit will then discuss Lowie’s recent opinion piece on transgender people using bathrooms.
“Policing who can and can’t access public bathrooms remain at the centre of debate, framed by the implication that trans women are a danger to cisgender (non-trans) women (a claim that has been proven to be false), while ignoring the fact that trans women are often the ones in most need of protection,” says Lowie, who is also Bristol24/7’s Production and Lifestyle Editor.
“In the UK, two thirds of trans people are afraid to use public bathrooms, but it’s often the cis voice put at the heart of the conversation, rather than the experiences of trans people.”
The pair also take an in depth look at a piece by Charlie Wright, asking what can be done to make the city’s queer spaces accessible, safe and diverse. Are they a place for straight people? Why does Bristol’s LGBTQ+ scene feel so party-focused? What can be done post-pandemic to improve spaces for queer people in Bristol?
As well as diving deep into the big questions (discussion on what topics raised in the Queer Catch Up is of course encouraged, through commenting, emailing and tweeting @lowietrevena, @kitmillion or @bristol247), the pair also take a look at the rest of LGBTQ+ History Month 2021.
Lowie is going to an event almost every night and Kit is looking forward to the numerous literature evenings taking place.
