Exploring the impact of Section 28

By Jujhar Kaur  Monday Dec 4, 2023

Tom Marshman aims to uncover the lost lives and representations of queer communities in a new podcast exploring the impact of Section 28.

Brought in under the Conservative government in 1988, Section 28 was a designation of laws banning local authorities and schools from “promoting homosexuality”. It wasn’t abolished until 2003.

It was a small group of people who were active in the struggle against Section 28 that formed Stonewall, a charity that fights for the rights and liberties of LGBTQ+ communities around the world.

For the four-part podcast series, Tom works in collaboration with Bristol University academics in the fields of law and history, and gathers the thoughts and experiences of LGBTQ+ community members living in Bristol, Gloucester, Weston Super-Mare and Peterborough.

Complimenting his podcast series, Tom newly produced body of work, The Show of Shows, explores his inner thoughts, emotions, and experiences towards Section 28 in a more expressionist approach, expanding his breadth of creative output on the subject.

The first episode of the four-part podcast series, Pain, Shame, Isolation and Resilience, debuted on Friday and featured a discussion on Section 28 and the law with Dr Peter Dunne, a senior lecturer at Bristol University. Peter is interested in how the law regulates the rights of LGBTQI+ people, how it helped to produce identities, how it can act as a barrier and how it can act as a catalyst for positive change and reform.

Upcoming episodes will explore The Distance Between the Past and the Present Collapsing, Queer Joy and Section 28 and the law.

All the podcasts will be available on Soundcloud, or find out more via www.tommarshman.com/.
