Funding secured for Bristol LGBT project

By Bristol24/7  Thursday Jul 27, 2017

We are excited to announce that Bristol24/7 has received £10,000 of funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a new project sharing LGBT voices and experiences.

Talking LGBT Bristol will be a digitally-led campaign, exploring and celebrating Bristol’s LGBT heritage. It aims to unearth and share LGBT memories and experiences in Bristol over the last 100 years.

Bristol24/7’s team of bloggers, journalists, LGBT editor and external video content creators will seek out the best and worst of LGBT experiences in Bristol, in order to create a short film documenting and encapsulating LGBT Bristol.

This digitally-led campaign comes at a time when the government is championing digital media and how it can help people access culture through its #cultureisdigital project. The aim of the project is to use digital as a tool and to help others access and learn about Bristol’s LGBT heritage.

The finale of the campaign will be marked with a screening of the short film, as well as a celebration event during Bristol Pride Week 2018, hosted by one of Bristol’s favourite LGBT nights.

Bristol24/7 Partnerships Manager Caragh Jones said: “As a Community Interest Company, our social impact is very important to us. One of our key aims is to provide a voice for all and we think this campaign will help empower and give confidence to the LGBT community in Bristol – we want everyone to be Talking LGBT Bristol.

“A big thank you to the National Lottery for making it possible. We look forward to launching the project and call out for contributors over the next month.”

Nerys Watts, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund South West, added: “We’re delighted to support this project which will share a century of voices from Bristol’s LGBT community – some for the very first time.

“A lasting digital legacy of stories will be created thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, and we look forward to seeing the exciting result at Bristol Pride Week next year!”
