Fundraiser launched to help vulnerable queer people in Bristol

By Lowie Trevena  Tuesday Mar 24, 2020

One of Bristol’s most prominent queer promoters has set up a fundraiser to support LGBTQ+ artists during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Wig in a Box’s founder, Clare Lowe, set up the Gofundme on Tuesday, March 17 to fund the company during the epidemic. The initial aim was to raise enough money to set up online platforms to edit and stream events by and for the LGBTQ+ community in Bristol, with Clare saying: “Wig in a Box has become a large part of the Bristol queer community but it is funded completely by ticket sales and self-funding.

“Due to the current pandemic, I have lost the majority of my income, ability to create community events and support the community I love so much.”

Within three days of the fundraiser being set up, the £1,000 goal was reached, allowing Clare to begin booking and paying performers, DJs and technical support and themselves for livestreamed shows.

However, with an increasingly dire outlook for the hospitality and entertainment industries, the goal was increased by £500 in order to keep the “scene alive and keeping our community safe and cared for as best we can”.

The fundraiser is now in place for another month. The money raised in total will now be split in half between Wig in a Box and an emergency funds for vulnerable people in Bristol’s queer community, providing money for essentials and supporting those most at need. Clare is currently seeking advice on how best to distribute the funds.

“Thank you so, so much for your unbelievable generosity in this time that I know is full of anxiety for all,” says Clare.
