LGBT+ Panel Discussion for History Month
The next generation will command the microphone at an LGBT+ panel discussion later this month.
February marks LGBT+ history month, and as part of a series of events throughout the city, the Young People’s Festival of Ideas will launch an event to discuss the past, present and future of the community.
Chair Cheryl Morgan, an LGBT historian, will lead an audience of under 25s in discussing issues facing young LGBT+ people. Young People’s Festival of Ideas: Language and Representation Within LGBT+ Culture will feature four panellists, each with a specific LGBT background in Bristol.
is needed now More than ever
The panel will include: James Higgins, LGBT editor for Bristol24/7; Marieke Roebuck, a PSHE teacher changing the face of sex education; and Kitt Burt, a young member of Freedom Youth.
The issue of schooling remains contentious, and discussing how LGBT+ issues and culture can feature in the curriculum will feature heavily in the group’s conversation.
The fairness of the media’s representation of LGBT+ issues, as well as the future of LGBT+ language are the other issues to round off the night’s discussions.
The topics were drawn from suggestions from young people, who will feature heavily in the dialogue. The issues nominated for the panel ranged broadly, from the medicalisation of transgender people, to the invalidation of bisexuality. It was decided that the topics of education, media representation, and language were the best ways to include the huge array of interest in the past and future of LGBT+.
When the cultural landscape and the language we use is constantly changing, organisers hope that in discussing representation, the panel will address the overarching theme of what the LGBT+ movement should mean to the future.
Catch the panel at 7:00pm, February 22, at the M Shed.
Tickets are free, but should be registered for. Over 25s are welcome, and a donation is suggested. Bring ID to buy drinks at the bar.
