Stonewall launches national celebration of equality in Bristol

By James Higgins  Friday Sep 29, 2017

Stonewall Season, an annual celebration of equality to promote LGBT rights across Britain, launches in Bristol on October 1 at the Engine Shed.

One of the Stonewall organisers, Angela Bryan-Brown, said: “Bristol has such a strong LGBT+ community that we knew it would be a great place to launch this national campaign”.

With events as wide ranging as sporting activities to club nights, the launch marks a week of activities organised by charities, businesses, and communities to promote equality. Last year, Stonewall Season brought thousands of LGBT+ people came together and 80 different events took place across 22 different towns.

Stonewall are hoping this year’s season will be bigger still.

Performances and talks are expected from Stand Against Racism and Inequality, Freedom Youth, Bristol PrideBristol Mind MindLine Trans+, and more, as charities and organisations come together to share stories, ideas, and help promote equality in Bristol and the UK.

Activities include a range of conversations on issues affecting the LGBT community, arts and crafts, storytelling and a rainbow-themed bake off. Stand-up comic and YouTube star Shon Faye is also due to perform

Attendees are also encouraged to bring along toiletries, food and clothing to share with members of the LGBT community who may be facing financial hardship. There will also be sanitary pads given to refugees.

Louise Smith, Director of Fundraising at Stonewall, said: ‘We’re so happy and grateful to see so many people come together to support equality as part of Stonewall Season and are delighted to be launching in Bristol.”

“As well as getting people together to have a good time, there’s a serious point to the Season. We need to work as part of a wider community to reach an even wider group of people with our positive message of LGBT inclusion. We can never be complacent about the rights we have worked so hard to win, and with so much change happening in Britain and around the world, we need to make sure LGBT equality stays high on the agenda.”
