Thomas Page McBee visits Bristol
An award-winning transgender writer will visit Bristol on May 25 to launch his new book, Man Alive. Thomas Page McBee’s acclaimed new work explores the concept of masculinity at a time of hypermedia awareness of transgender issues. An acclaimed writer for Vice, Buzzfeed, and The New York Times, Man Alive has drawn significant praise and many awards.
Whether it’s an erosion of transgender rights by Donald Trump or the increasing militarism of many countries around the world, masculinity is being critiqued more keenly than ever. Grayson Perry’s The Descent of Man is just the latest.
is needed now More than ever
On his journey, Thomas has had to consider masculinity in a way many may not. He has had to confront the suffering he has endured at the hands of men: the abuse he endured from his father and the violent mugging which almost killed him. Thomas seeks to understand the flawed concept of manhood he has grown up surrounded by.
The book is a memoir of a transgender person; it’s been variously described as powerful, uplifting, and profound. So far, it was has won a Lambda Literary Award and was chosen as Book of the Year by Publishers Weekly.
To catch Thomas, head to Waterstones, May 25, 7 pm. Tickets available here.
