Trans suicide awareness campaign launched for Pride month
As Pride Month begins, Zero Suicide Bristol have launched its latest campaign for greater awareness around transgender suicides.
Zero Suicide Bristol campaigns for lower suicide rates in the city. Currently, Bristol has the highest number of suicides for its population of any of the UK’s core cities and Zero Suicide hopes to raise awareness and eradicate the issue through tackling stigma, working with local organisations and implement suicide prevention.
Suicide is rampant throughout the city and especially within the LGBTQ+ community.
is needed now More than ever
A 2018 report by Bristol Healthwatch and the Diversity Trust found that 71 per cent of the 200 trans and non-binary participants taking part had considered taking their own life, with 40 per cent having planned a suicide attempt.
The study also found a high level of discrimination felt within the health care system, with 30 per cent of participants feeling discriminated against.
In response, Zero Suicide Bristol will be raising awareness of the levels of suicide and attempted suicide within the trans community throughout June.
“During Pride month we have the opportunity to talk about issues that are directly affecting the LGBTQ+ community and to try and raise awareness of them with the general public,” said Zero Suicide Bristol spokesperson James Cox.
