Ensuring the wellbeing and rights of disabled people across Bristol
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which are an urgent call for action by all countries working in a global partnership.
In Bristol, the Global Goals Centre is celebrating a new hero every week for their work to tackle poverty, inequality and climate change.
In the second week of the campaign, the focus of the Sustainable Development Goals is around health and wellbeing – and the local hero who has gone above and beyond in the area is Dan Bourton, who works at the Bristol Disability Equality Forum.
is needed now More than ever
Dan was nominated because as soon as the first lockdown started he began running the peer support sessions online every day of the week – as well as supporting peer support beneficiaries outside of peer support meetings, even going round to someone’s house to check they are okay.
“Our Making Change Happen peer support community have been meeting online every day during the pandemic, where we discuss issues around Disability but we also discuss issues that can affect everyone such as mental health and confidence,” explains Dan.
“The biggest issue for many people is a lack of confidence and we want Disabled people to know that there is a community that values them that they can turn to when in doubt. We would like to think that a more supportive, open and understanding community is something that the whole city would welcome.”
On being nominated as a hero for the Global Goals Centre, Dan said: “It’s nice to be appreciated for doing a decent job. I like meeting people and it’s amazing how much people appreciate it when you just take an interest in them and listen to what they have to say.”
It’s easy to support the well-being of others. To support Dan and the work he is achieving in Bristol, read and sign up for the Bristol Disability Equality Forum manifesto, which provides achievable goals for everyone.
The Global Goals Centre is an education charity using creative ways to inspire a fairer, greener future, has worked in partnership with 17 local community organisations, Bristol24/7’s Better Bristol and creative agency Tusko, to create this campaign, which is supported by Bristol City Council and the Bristol Climate Hub.
A series of 17 short videos, one for each of the 17 Global Goals, are being released from Tuesday 6th July. Each one highlights a Bristol hero who is doing something inspiring to help reach that Goal.
