Three places to visit with a baby for free

By Helen Martin  Wednesday Oct 1, 2014

Windmill Hill City Farm

The sun is shining, the pig is lazing in his wooden house; tail occasionally twitching upwards to the blue sky, the goats are trotting about acknowledging their visitors with a nuzzle, and the glorious allotments are brimming with a bountiful harvest. The good life. Windmill Hill City Farm is a beautiful country escape in an urban land. Get stuck in to a gardening tutorial, jump in the play zone, or relax in the cafe. This time of year is a visual feast.

Watercress Road, Bristol, BS2 9YJ. Open everyday 10am – 5pm (4pm in winter).

Leigh Woods

Great for a Sunday, or any day. This National Trust broadleaf woodland holds various pathways to choose, depending on your time and endurance levels. It’s incredibly beautiful and glows with life. When we meander to the woods, my daughter lies back in her sling and stares up at the canopy of oak, small leaf lime and ash trees, in awe. There’s a natural play area for children, with swings, balance beams, logs, dens and group zones.

Near Bristol, Bristol. Free parking

Bristol Museum & Art Gallery

The cafe is a little oasis of calm and the cafe serves fantastic cake, while the museum space itself offers such a huge expanse of space and variations in colour and light, it enthrals a little baby’s senses. Go meet another mum and devour the cake, while the babies admire, or get in the wonderful Curiosity, a gated mini museum with ‘exhibits’, stage and padded area for under seven year-olds.

College Green, Bristol BS1 5TJ. Open Monday – Friday 10 – 4.30pm and at weekends and bank holidays from 10 – 5.30pm.
