Foster mum Andy Hider has cared for more than 150 children over the the past 35 years.
In recognition of her dedication to supporting some of Bristol’s most vulnerable children, Andy, who lives in Keynsham, received an MBE from the Queen on March 3 at Buckingham Palace.
Andy joined hundreds of other extraordinary people from across the UK who were recognised for their achievements in the New Year’s Honours List for 2020.

The foster carer was nominated by one of her sons, which Andy remarked was as meaningful as the MBE itself. Characteristically humble, she accepted the honour on behalf of all foster carers and the valuable work they do.
“Of course I enjoyed the occasion and I’m thrilled to be honoured in this way, but at the back of my head is always the reality – I’m no more special than any of the other people who look after foster children,” she said. “When I listen to what they’ve had to cope with, I’m in awe.”
Andy first started fostering 35 years ago when a bookmark fell out of a book in her local library. It had an advert on it for a fostering scheme for teenagers.
The 75-year-old works for independent agency Amicus Foster Care, which is based in Bristol, Wiltshire, Swindon, Bath & North East Somerset, Gloucestershire, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Somerset. The organisation has placed over 500 young people into foster homes since 2009.
Even though she is retiring from foster care soon, Andy is hopeful that her career will inspire more carers to do what she has done. Andy said that if she could go back to 1985 and make the choice between doing any career, or the same again, she would choose foster care every time.
