Nature in the Home

By Lou Archell  Wednesday Oct 1, 2014

I am a country girl living in the city, but that doesn’t stop me enjoying nature every day. Walks in the woods, wild adventures with my sons, growing my own vegetables at my allotment. It’s important to me to feel the change in the seasons and for my sons to grow up with a knowledge and understanding of nature and the identification of our native species. Trees, flowers, leaves, mush-rooms, feathers, pebbles, shells – the nature that surrounds us.

A couple of years ago I started to write about plants and flowers regularly on my blog, Little Green Shed, under a series called Nature in the Home. I began to notice a growing trend in interior styling using plants, flowers, and natural ephemera to enhance a room. Interior stylists such as Sibella Court really championed the use of driftwood, skulls and shells in her rooms.

Now in its third year, Nature in the Home has grown to become a successful collaborative project, with fellow treasure hunters joining in from all over the world. Discovering the joy of foraging for seasonal blooms, finding that perfect pebble on a beach, a fallen feather, the worlds largest pine cone, it’s infectious. Within each treasure found, is a memory of a time or place, the person who were with when you discovered it, the sun on your back, sand between your toes.

I have collections all over the house. Shells, pebbles, a pot full of feathers. Our mantlepiece holds our current favourite treasures and we have a special curio cabinet, full of found gems.

Why not get out there this weekend, and see what you can find? Those hedgerows are looking fabulous at the moment.  And don’t forget to post a picture on Instagram and use the hashtag #natureinthehome, so we can all see.
