Preview: FUTURES Festival 2022

FUTURES returns to Bristol and Bath with its usual eclectic mix of free events, talks and activities for all ages.

The festival of discovery is taking place during the last weekend in September (and beyond) and celebrates the brilliant research taking place at universities across the South-West.

BRISTOL: UP LATE AT THE S.S. GREAT BRITAIN

Explore a huge range of fascinating, interactive and hands-on exhibits showcasing cutting-edge research. Hear first-hand accounts from researchers about their life and work through short talks, performances and poetry readings.

The event includes free entry to the S.S. Great Britain (normally £19.50 for 17+ and £12 for 5-16)

When and where? Fri 30 Sept, 6.30 – 9pm at the S.S. Great Britain.

Who’s it for? Perfect for ages 8-12, but all are welcome.

EU Futures 2019 Events, Bristol

BRISTOL: CONVERSATIONS ON…

Join researchers at various venues across Bristol for a series of informal, short and thought-provoking short conversations on health, environment, science and media.

When and where? 12, 13, 19 & 20 Oct at multiple venues in Bristol (see website for details)

Who’s it for? Teenagers and adults

BATH: TEST TUBES AND TIME TRAVEL

During an immersive theatrical journey, you’ll discover the extraordinary, untold scientific pioneers from the city whose work laid the foundations for the greatest invention of all time. You’ll visit locations around the city centre and unlock videos that reveal the stories behind historic scientific pioneers, meet some of the scientists and engineers working in Bath today, and decode the puzzle to reveal the true identity of your mystery travel guide.

When and where? Fri 30 Sept & Sat 1 Oct, 10am-11pm, all around Bath

Who’s it for? Older children and adults

BATH: SCIENCE SHOWOFF

The UK’s most ridiculous science comedy night. Join MC Steve Cross for facts, nonsense, and extreme learning as six scientists and engineers become performers for one-night only.

When and where? Fri 30 Sept, 7-8.30pm at The Mission Theatre

Who’s it for? Older children and adults

BATH: Building a Digital You 

Discover more about how digital technologies are revolutionising the way we think about entertainment, health and wellbeing, and sports. Join researchers to immerse yourself in digital worlds and take part in demonstrations using state-of-the-art equipment.

When and where? Friday 30 Sept, 6-8pm at Walcot House.

Who’s it for? Adults

BATH: BIOLOGY IN ACTION!

Find out how bees and other insects are affected by farming, how climate change is affecting our use land, sustainable and future foods and much more.  Discover the latest research with mini-talks and what goes on behind the scenes in a lab.

When and where? Sat 1 Oct, 1-4pm at Bath Spa University Newton Park

Who’s it for? All ages

BATH: IMAGES OF RESEARCH

Through an exhibition of stunning images, discover how the University of Bath’s innovative research is working to address issues faced by communities across the South West and beyond.

When and where? Wed 28 Sept, 10am-5pm. Takes place outside Bath Spa Railway Station
