The most popular pet name in Bristol revealed
Choosing your pet’s name is often a matter of careful consideration but it seems that in Bristol at least, pet owners think alike. According to The Vet, the most popular name for our furry friends in Bristol is Bella, and this applies to both feline and canine pets.
Lola was also a firm favourite for Bristol dogs, closely followed by Poppy and Teddy. While for our feline friends, Luna was a close runner-up to the top name.

Sophie Halhead, Clinical Director at The Vet Bristol said that pet names are an interesting indicator of our growing emotional connection with our pets. “Traditional pet names such as Rover and Fluffy are falling firmly out of fashion as pets become ever more central to our lives and we seek to humanise them.”
Sophie continued: “It’s interesting to see how sweet and simple names endure in popularity and are always a good choice for your pet, no matter what species.”

How to name your four-legged friend
- Keep it simple
Think about what your pet will learn and respond to. Calling “Come here, Ferdinand Henry III” across the park will most likely be wearing for both you and your dog.
- Don’t rush it
When you and your new pet are becoming acquainted, don’t rush to name them. You may want to wait a few days to see what their personality is like first and to find a name that fits.
- Think about the sound
Not so important if you’re naming a rabbit but if you have a puppy and want to train them, consider common commands that could cause confusion. ‘Joe’ is too close to ‘No’ for example.
- Have fun
It’s far less daunting naming your pet that a child so remember to have fun and choose a name you can live with for a long time.
