The Promise for families

By Helen Martin  Tuesday Oct 7, 2014

Build imaginary cities, create crazy guests for The Promise Hotel and draw new masterpieces! While in Leigh Woods and on Bristol Downs, play and forage in a series of interactive workshops.

Families can explore the themes and ideas behind the exhibition The PromiseThe Promise, in a programme of fun and creative activities, situated in Gallery 5 on Level 2 of Arnolfini – a lively space, dedicated to families.

Moving outside, as part of The Promise and PARADISE exhibition organised by the National Trust, Artist collective Assemble, present Spirit of Play – a series of interactive workshops in Leigh Woods designed to explore play in public spaces and to develop new techniques for facilitating free and self-directed play.  The next event is a Mud Play Workshop, on Saturday 25 October and Sunday 26 October.

Staying outdoors, BBC favourite Andy Hamilton will lead families on a foraging adventure around the Bristol Downs in search of some of the plants that helped to inspire his best-selling book. After collecting edible hedgerow treats, Hamilton will teach families how to turn their haul into delicious treats.

During October’s We Are Family free drop in session and film screening also on 25 October, children will have the opportunity to create works of art inspired by the city and their own imaginations

Beyond The Promise, there are still lots of activities for families taking place in the building.

This half term, Bristol’s Family Arts Festival returns with a dynamic programme of theatre, art, music, dance, literature, film, storytelling and more. Taking place at venues across the city, from Friday 17 October to Sunday 2 November.

Arnolfini Shop offers a great selection of children’s books, postcards and gifts to keep families entertained. Situated on the historic harbourside, Arnolfini Café Bar offers good value, nutritious children’s dishes, plus specially selected wines, beers and homemade food for grown-ups.
