A weekend of cycling and car-free streets

By Kati Harris  Friday Aug 18, 2017

Bristol is at the ready for a huge weekend of cycling, with the Bristol Grand Prix on Saturday and the HSBC UK City Ride on Sunday promising two days of car-free streets across the city centre.

The Bristol Grand Prix has brought high-quality circuit cycle racing to the heart of our city since 2015 and now holds a firm place on the national race calendar.

A fast figure of eight course will be starting and finishing on College Green on Saturday, August 19.

Before the racing starts, anyone can take part in a Love Your Bike lap at 10.30am. Entries cost £1.50 per rider and the proceeds go to Bowel Cancer West’s Young Patients Appeal.

Then on Sunday, August 20, the HSBC UK City Bike Ride comes to Bristol for the first time.

With the main event happening in Castle Park, this is a cycling event for the whole family around a 5.5km-route and is designed to encourage as many people as possible to get out on their bikes and experience a car-free Bristol.

From 11am, there will be a host of cycling information, freebies, free entertainment and food stalls on offer.

Highlights of the day include the chance to get a personalised bib, race on the pop-up street velodrome, try some virtual reality track cycling, and grab a drink and a bite to eat at the cafe.

At special points around the route, you will be able to try a host of different types of bikes, enjoy entertainment and music, and take on the Sir Chris Hoy Speed Challenge and test your sprint skills against the best
