Denim for spring

By Helen Martin  Monday Mar 2, 2015

Denim flares, dungarees, apron dresses, patchwork and culottes. Yes, culottes are back again for the summer and yes, flares – every fashion editor is trying to persuade you, flares are back. They’re very flattering so we are told; minimising the waist and all very relaxed and boho-cool.

To what do we owe the honour of these denim trends filling the High Street? Mainly – but not entirely – because of a revived and bountiful love affair with the 70s. Spring/summer catwalks were dominated by pattern, fringing, shirts, boots and denim. Perfect for the summer festival season, a golden hue and photographs with streaks of sunrays. Some people say we hark back to the old days because we don’t know where to go anymore. There’s no definitive trend of now, it’s all pulled trends from times past. The 70s are as good a place as any to whizz back to. The vibe also feels right for now, a bit political and a good mix with 90s styles.

That said, denim has of course been around for decades and never went ‘out’, and what’s more, this spring/summer as well as the past inspiring designers’ styles on the catwalks, there was a mix of denim in modern tailoring styles; military jackets, shirt dresses and detailing such as shearling and… crystals. Burberry Prorsum showed luxurious denim – fitted, layered and embellished, while Michael Kors was chic, tailored and structured, Gucci had a smart military vibe and Chloe featured longer length skirts, relaxed fit tops and a pretty silhouette. The most prominent, the safe bet – is a denim jacket. That’s both practical for spring layering and years to come. For fun, culottes with boots while the chill’s still in the air and Swedish Hasbeen clogs for summer.
