Folk Tales
I ask you this; why have simplicity when you can have detail that makes the mind and imagination tick tock – open to possibility, story telling and wild adventure?
The opposite of the power suits of finance, the folk trend is intrinsically more gentle and unapologetic about its love of flowing skirts, embroidery and peace. There’s a certain calmness that exudes the appreciation of natural colours, materials picked for the way they move in the wind and skim over as opposed to cling, to one’s shape. It’s about being friendly not fierce, saying yes to campfires in the rain and unravelling shy inhibitions, not folding deals and pointing fingers. That’s not to say the folk trend isn’t passionate. Folk clearly knows creativity and love. You can fight with these qualities and folk will, but its favourite pastime is to settle down to a feast with friends and enjoy merriment until the dawn birds sing. Pretty fun, that folk.
On the catwalks, Dolce & Gabbana flooded the catwalk with woodland creatures, Alexander McQueen created a fairytale, while Polo Ralph Lauren sported handicraft touches. So, put away that whiteboard shopping list and grab the whicker basket. Think French relaxed attitude, it will come (naturally) and you will be in the right mood for some texture and patterned scarves. A cape. Don’t over do it though – Coco Chanel is still your unmoving and true style guide – the odd bits of folk will do you.
Wrap yourself up in a blanket jacket, float in an embroidered blouse, swish in a pretty skirt and sling on a casual knit. Osmosis through clothing, I’m a firm believer. If you’re not feeling calm and collected in an hour my darling, put a shell to your ear and listen to the ocean. Folk fashion now called folk tales, too!
