Hoarding pays off at The In Scene

By Emma Gorton-Ellicott  Thursday Mar 30, 2017

Thanks to Jan Crees’ rather enthusiastic hoarding obsession, pop-up vintage shop The In Scene was born. Jan spent years working at Bristol Textiles Recyclers saving garments from landfill until she had a collection of fashion treasures, vintage bric a brac and fabrics to fill the wonderland emporium within The Vintage Market on Stokes Croft, a former motorbike showroom.

You will find The In Scene sitting at the back of the large open plan market, sharing the space with vintage toy collectors, vinyl and furniture hoarders alike. With items ranging from the 1940s to the present day, it’s definitely a place to explore and find hidden gems.

“I saved lots of garments, collected for years and I am a terrible hoarder,” confesses Jan. “I met charity Second Chance buying furniture to upcycle and they suggested a unit here, which is run by the charity.”

Second Chance started as a church community in East Bristol, to help raise funds for the community projects, one of which is the Stokes Croft Vintage Market. They started off upcycling furniture, but soon branched out and invited traders to join them and open a stall at an affordable rate. It was a great opportunity for Jan to say “I was here first” and get The In Scene on the ever-growing Stokes Croft map.

It is clear Jan loves all of the items she has salvaged and hoarded. She knows a huge amount about fashion, and is passionate about saving the environment. It shows in the way she talks lovingly about the items and the shop.

Fashion enthusiast Paul Madley is behind The In Scene’s social media presence. “There’s such a sense of magic at The In Scene,” he says. “Every time you shop there, there’s this sense of excitement that you’ll find some secret treasures. You’ll find something, rare, beautiful or unique. It’s a special place.”
