The social media campaign uniting ethical fashion brands from around the world

By Emma Gorton-Ellicott  Tuesday Oct 15, 2019

The #GoodBrandsDoBetterTogether social media campaign was set up by Knowle West-based fashion promoter Stevie Mitchell and showcases ethical and sustainable fashion brands from around the world.

The campaign shares photos of ethical garments and accessories, all created considering both the impact on the environment and the people that made them.

As well as starting the campaign, Stevie also runs Bambooka UK, a volunteer-run, sustainable sunglasses and eyewear brand that invests profits directly into partner charities, which include Vision Aid Overseas and PEPE. He is also is in the process of launching his own affordable and ethical fashion label, CDUK, creating everyday wear made by people earning a living wage and using sustainable materials

“Both are relatively small projects with minimal marketing budgets,” says Stevie. “Spreading the word about Bambooka’s sustainable sunglasses or CDUK’s ethical t-shirts isn’t easy, which led me to create the campaign.

Sourcing the independent brands from sustainable living Facebook groups, including the Ethical Hour and Pebble Pod, Stevie encouraged sustainable fashion designers from all over the world to come together in his campaign.

The products sourced are styled by Luisa Kearney and photographed by Weronika Karczewska, and feature in a weekly campaign social media post. Each look features up to eight brands and more than 20 ethical brands have collaborated on the project.

“We’re working together to help dispel the myth that there are not sustainable alternatives to most products on the market,” says Stevie. “I have learnt about the devastating effect the fashion industry is having on the lives of the people making our clothes and the environment. People are made to work in conditions that constitute modern slavery and polluting from the factories has led to debilitating health issues for children and newborn babies in the communities that surround the factories.”

Up to eight sustainable and ethical fashion pieces are styled each time for the #GoodbrandsDoBetterTogether campaign

Sustainable fashion brands taking part in the campaign are located across the world, from Brighton to Sydney in Australia. Bristol-based brand GRN Sportwear, whose high-performance clothing is ethically and sustainably handmade in the UK, are also included.

Stevie hopes that the campaign will encourage consumers to slow down and consider sustainable fashion options: “A few ethical brands will gain mass exposure, which is good, but if all of us smaller brands worked together to replace the companies that don’t care about the people making their products or the environment; that could mean an ethical or sustainable alternative to almost any product on the market.”

The #GoodBrandsDoBetterTogether social media campaign runs every Wednesday until November 6.
