Well-meaning coats

By Helen Martin  Wednesday Oct 1, 2014

These coats will set you in good stead for our friend, The Winter Months

Now, is everyone ready? Let’s begin. We all know that autumn is the time for summer scorched green leaves to turn from golden, to red, then fall to the ground in copious heaps. For lighting our fireplaces and embracing the warmth they deliver. So far, so Pinterest. However, let us not deny that autumn can also hold those almighty strikes from the heavens; the gods bellowing down at us – sat on a bus stop in the pelting rain, cursing the clouds and a broken umbrella. Those pretty leaves becoming slippery and sludgy. Frizzy hair. Yes, it’s not the end of the world and it’s OK (obviously) that the sky isn’t glorious and blue everyday, the kids have forgotten their wellies and you’re as cold as ice. A picture perfect life would be dull. So, how to both grasp the spectacular, the inevitable slip ups and the less glamorous life admin situations that occur in everyone’s life. Even Eva Mendes (joyous woman and love partner of Ryan Gosling) has to walk – and look fantastic – in the rain sometimes. Cara D. probably totally digs the rain.

The first thing is attitude. On thousands of magnets, cups and posters you will find those sugar sweet sentiments on gosh, darn – life being what you make it. ‘Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be!’ shouts Abraham Lincoln from the fridge. Don’t believe for a second that I like these trinkets, but believe that there is an element of control to how you view a less than ideal situation. Occasionally we want to bask in the drama, in which case you must make like Kate Bush a la Wuthering Heights and sit in the eye of the pathetic fallacy (rainy bus stop). Some things are awful. But mostly, you can laugh. Keep your cool with tantrums, dance in the rain. Sing.

The second autumnal prospering device is a coat. Coats are beautiful constructions, made to wrap you up in a stylish cuddle. And this season, the coats on offer are voluminous, made of soft faux fur and some, are quite literally cocoons. There’s nothing better than laughing in the face of weather adversity and looking glamorous on Clevedon pier in leopard print. Sartorial strength exists my friends, and those weather gods are looking down and approving. They’ll still try and super soak you, but they’ll be admiring your aplomb.
