Winter Fashion: Cosy chic

By Gina Jones  Friday Dec 19, 2014

The weather outside is frightful, but winter fashion can be truly delightful

Wearing layer upon layer and braving the Bristol wind and rain may not feel very fashionable, but with a few key purchases you can look fabulous and stay warm at the same time.

Chunky knits are having a bit of a ‘fashion moment’ this year, thanks to the popularity of certain Skandi detective shows where they rock those jumpers like they’re this season’s Chanel. Fortunately for us, you don’t have to spend Chanel prices to get the look. There’s something extremely comforting about a cosy woollen jumper, mittens and a hat and, when worn with a beautiful shearling coat. Just give the Ugg boots a miss if you want to keep it classy.

Feel-good furs were all over the catwalks for this season. Why are they feel-good? Well, they will literally warm your cockles but they’re also animal friendly, because they’re faux furs. Faux doesn’t mean they’ve skimped on style though – with beautiful detailing and carefully tailored designs, high street retailers have really come up trumps. This season you’ll find furs in every colour of the rainbow, but if you want your purchase to have staying power, invest in classic tones like grey, mink and cream, which are perennial fashion favourites.

50 Shades of Grey isn’t out until next year, but fashion-wise it’s so right now. Muted tones mixed with pastels can offer a lovely lift to an otherwise dull winter outfit. Remember, grey doesn’t have to mean boring. Invest in quality fabrics like wool and cashmere for a really luxe look this season.

The key to staying chic and cosy is not to add too much bulk – don’t go oversized on everything and spend a little extra on a tailored coat that will emphasise your silhouette, rather than masking it.

By shopping wisely this year, you can fill your wardrobe with a few practical but stylish pieces that’ll keep you warm and be a great investment for many winters to come.

Please note the items shown are from current stock and subject to availability.
