Work style

By Sally Telford  Wednesday Oct 15, 2014

Dressing up for work is fun. I love to get smart in the morning, it’s always been this way

I spent a long time working in restaurants so the office smart casual rules still feel like dressing up. I have always longed for an excuse to wear a full on suit and a buttery soft leather tote bag that smacks of ‘I am important’.

In reality I am part of a small team in an office where the dress code is more casual-smartish than power suits and heels. I also walk or cycle to work, as many in Bristol do so heels are not an option anyway. But I still feel its important for me to be smart, if nothing else it marks a change from my normal days at home running around after my daughter.

I love to shop in Bristol, we have it all, the great British high street stores from cheap as chips to the higher end in Cabot Circus, the more fabulous Harvey Nichols catering for those who can splash the cash on designer outfits and then lots of fabulous independents dotted all over the city.

I like to keep things simple, it makes me feel chic and pulled together even if the morning was a mad dash to get everyone dressed, breakfasted and out the door before 8am. Pieces that are interchangeable with some bright and fun accessories and the all important flat shoe (must look good but MUST be comfortable). A little twist to a classic like a peplum on a white shirt and a pop of colour on my lips are all important – you must feel like you.

My favourite places to find work wear are French Connection and Whistles, I also adore Maze in Clifton Village and Pink Lemons and Fox and Feather on Gloucester Road always have something a little different that no-one else in your office will have.

Ultimately it’s all about feeling comfortable and GOOD about yourself so you can do your job without thinking too much about your clothes.
