Get away from it all with a trip to Thermae Bath Spa
As a parent, bath times can be very much less than relaxing. It’s as if they know – as soon as the bottle of luxury bubble bath opens, invariably at least one child starts screaming.
So, I was excited to call a babysitter, venture over to Thermae Bath Spa with my partner to see the makeover they had had back in the spring, and, above all, to relax.
The Twilight Package (£88) entitles two people to use the spa facilities for three hours, plus a main course and a drink each in the Springs Restaurant. We arrived at 6pm, checked in and were issued with a comfy robe, towel and flip flops.

After a quick change, we went down to the Minerva Bath and floated around on the lazy river, catching up on our respective days. After a good half-an-hour of relaxation, we visited the Wellness Suite.
This is where the main changes have taken place: the old steam room pods have been replaced with two new steam rooms, one Roman- and one Georgian-themed. They were very pleasant, so steamy that you couldn’t see the person sitting next to you (perhaps a good thing), and not overly hot.
From here we went into the new Ice Chamber, where you can use the ice from the trough in the centre of the room to actively cool areas of the body, and, refreshed, continued into the Infrared Sauna.
The infrared light is supposed to penetrate deep into the body, relaxing the muscles. My partner had a bad shoulder and sat in front of the lights for a while, but sadly the room was a bit chilly so we went to the moody Experience Showers and then the Celestial Relaxation Room to warm up.
However, we were thwarted again there – the five heated loungers, which you can relax on and look up at the twinkly ceiling, were occupied – so we had to give it a miss.

Instead, we headed up to the rooftop pool, which was, without a doubt, my favourite part of the whole experience. The heated pool looks out over Bath’s rooftops as the sun goes down: absolute bliss. It also started to rain slightly whilst we were in the pool, which added some magic to the whole experience.
With our three hours up, we got changed to avoid sitting in a damp swimsuit through dinner, and headed to the restaurant. The food looked delicious, so we treated ourselves to a starter (not part of the package), to go with our mains and a glass of wine each. I had the creamy goats cheese to start followed by a succulent pork belly and both were lovely.
It was a wonderful and thoroughly relaxing way to spend an evening, floating away from the stresses of modern life. The changes to the spa have given customers more options, and although some of the new rooms are quite small and therefore busy, it was great to see Thermae Bath Spa looking less tired and more loved. A bit like me, as we headed back to Bristol.
