How can I get fit safely and efficiently?

Initially it’s best to start your keep-fit regime within realistic targets and goals. Do not expect to achieve your targets immediately. Seek advice from a doctor or sports professional if you have any health issues that could potentially hinder you from training. Small steps are more effective than leaping in at the deep end. Ensure that you are preforming any exercise with correct technique, seek advice from a personal trainer or fitness instructor, qualified to give you advice and personally show you how to perform the exercise efficiently and effectively.

What about The Core? I have heard so much about the importance of core strength, what does improving it do for your health and fitness?

Core strength exercises strengthen your core muscles, including your abdominal muscles, back muscles and pelvis area. Strong core muscles make it easier to do many physical activities. Breathing is another factor. Ensure that you breathe deeply through the nose and out through the mouth. Many people tend to hold their breath when performing the hardest part of the exercise. Keep practising this and you will find that your training will become a lot more effective.

How can I incorporate weights into my routine? Are weights for everyone?

There are numerous ways to incorporate weights in to your training. For example, if you are trying to improve aerobic fitness while improving strength, circuit training could be a good option. This would involve choosing say, eight to ten weight training exercises and performing them one after another, with a minimal rest period. The exercises will improve strength, and at the same time, the constant movement from one exercise to the next with minimal rest will improve aerobic fitness.

What else can I do every day to improve my health and fitness?

Here are six very simple ways to improve health and fitness: 1. Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated. 2. If you drive, park as far away from the front door as possible. 3. Ensure you are eating a healthy balanced diet – health is 75% based on your diet and 25% on exercise. 4. Try your best to have adequate sleep on a daily basis. 5. If you cannot make it to the gym for any reason, then ensure you do something from home. 6. Try new and different exercises and mix your programme up, as this will help you not to plateau and prevent you from lacking in motivation.
