What happens if you are no longer able to care for your family pet due to ill health?

We love our animals here in the West Country! According to statistics compiled by the Royal Veterinary College of London there are over 600,000 pet cats and dogs registered with vets within the South West alone. Many of us have pets within the home for the majority of our lives and these furry friends are considered part of the family providing companionship, loyalty and affection throughout our time.
But what happens when we are no longer able to fulfil all of our pet’s requirements? For example if we can no longer take our dog for a walk due to ill-health, or perhaps due to a hospital or hospice stay, taking care of our pet is just not possible? These are genuine real life concerns for elderly people in the community and can cause high levels of stress and anxiety. Thankfully, South West based charity ‘The Cinnamon Trust’ are on hand to provide support in such an instance and are able to offer reassurance and support to elderly and terminally ill residents throughout the UK.

The Cinnamon Trust was founded in 1985 and has a network of around 16,000 volunteers that help with animal fostering (both long and short term), pet visiting and dog walking, and also re-homing when an owner can no longer keep their pet due to ill-health, moving to residential care, or if the owner sadly passes away. The support of the Cinnamon Trust is invaluable to its members giving them peace of mind regarding their beloved pet’s welfare and even providing owners with updates, visits and photos from their pets.

Charities such as The Cinnamon Trust rely heavily on the support of donations made by the general public. Around 94% of the charity’s reported income last year alone derived specifically from donations and legacies. If you are a pet owner, or even just an animal lover, it may be worth considering leaving a legacy within your Will to a charity such as The Cinnamon Trust. Every penny counts and leaving a legacy in your Will could help the charity really change the life of an elderly person in need. Making a Will can be an easy, affordable and straightforward process, and it’s also worth remembering that gifts to registered charities are exempt from inheritance and capital gains taxes too.

Wills & Probate experts ‘ELM Legal Services’ are a local firm who can provide advice and support when making a Will and are also avid supporters of charities within the region, particularly those relating to animal welfare. In fact, after recognising how vital the services that The Cinnamon Trust provide to elderly and vulnerable people within the area, ELM’s Managing Director decided to get in touch with the charity directly and was inspired to do something personally to raise awareness of the charity and to find a way to raise some money for their cause as well. Mr Emsley will therefore be taking on the incredibly muddy ‘Sodbury Slog’ 9 mile challenge this November and all sponsorship funds will be going directly to The Cinnamon Trust. If you would like to sponsor him for the challenge all donations are strongly appreciated and further information can be found at: https://www.charitychoice.co.uk/fundraiser/jamesemsley/sodbury-slog

Alternatively, if you are interested in leaving a gift in your Will to The Cinnamon Trust (or another charity), please do not hesitate to get in touch with ELM directly on  0800 019 4557 or online at www.elm-online.co.uk where the team are on hand to answer your queries and can help you get a new Will in place.
