Pedal power supports Bristol’s children’s hospital
A Bristol charity aims to raise £100,000 for Bristol Royal Hospital for Children‘s Neuroscience and Major Trauma and Rehabilitation Unit, by cycling from Bristol to Paris.
A team 80 intrepid cyclists, including members of staff at the hospital, set off from Ashton Court with 430km of tarmac, hills and aching legs ahead of them.
The dedicated team at Bristol children’s hospital provides physio, occupational therapy, supportive psychology and round-the-clock nursing care to the city’s young people.
is needed now More than ever
The trip took four days, with the cyclists covering up to 120km per day. Four-time Ironman World Champion and British triathlete Chrissie Wellington opened the event, cheering up the participants with some words of wisdom.
Izak Heys was one of the cyclists riding for the cause. His son was treated on the Major Trauma and Rehabilitation Unit for over three months after he fractured his skull. “I wanted to raise awareness for the fantastic organisation that looked after our son and our family during a crisis,” he explains.
“Throughout those three-and-a-half months, it really felt like a whole community was looking after us and supporting us through a very difficult period.
“I’m pleased to say that, thanks to the incredible support of family, friends, local businesses and hospital staff, we are very nearly at the £100,000 fundraising target.”
