The relaxation retreat for Bristol mums
Mama’s Afternoon Retreat is an afternoon especially for mums to escape the stresses of everyday life and relax through holistic therapies.
The brains behind this cosy retreat taking place at The Forge on Sunday, November 13 is Katy Batt, a holistic and wellness therapist and proud mum of two from Clevedon.
Katy started out working as a junior accountant, but after having her first son she decided to pursue her interest in spirituality and healing.
is needed now More than ever
“Maternity leave changes who you are and your outlook and perspective,” explains Katy.
“I thought ‘I don’t want to be an accountant anymore’ and because I’d always been interested in spirituality and holistics, I first of all started to explore it for myself. When I realised the benefits of it I thought this is what i want to do.”
She is now hoping to share her positive experience with other mums, to help them wind down, relax and have some quality time to focus on their well being.
“Being a mum myself, I know all the different demands that we have to go through and we can find it really hard to find time for ourselves.
“I like to encourage them to have me time and self care, and to know that it’s important to look after themselves to look after everyone else.”
The schedule for the retreat includes a variety of different techniques for relaxation and self-development.
After getting to know one another over afternoon tea, Katy will lead her fellow mums in crystal healing, oracle card readings, meditation and journal writing. She has also arranged for friend and photographer Viktoria Kuti to speak to the group about the importance of loving yourself for who you are.
Katy specialises is crystal healing, which involves placing crystals on the energy centres of the body to draw out any negativity and replace it with healing energy.
She explains that “people may think there’s nothing to it or that it’s a bit magicy, but the underlying principle of it all is using the crystals or other techniques like journaling to express yourself, ways of reflection and coming face to face with your emotions.”
Katy herself has experienced the struggles that many mums can face. After suffering from post-natal depression following the birth of her second son, this encouraged her to pursue holistic therapy further.
Now, the aim of her retreat is to help others talk about their emotions rather than bottling them up.
“It’s okay to feel sad or nervous or anxious, don’t try to push it all down and put on a front… I was put on medication for my anxiety which is great I would never ever say that holistic therapy should replace that but it can definitely help.”
The hope is that this will be the first of many afternoons and coffee mornings, to create a community of mums who can support each other and find a space to relax.
