Walking for mental health awareness
This September a walk to raise awareness of mental health will take place on the harbourside.
Walking Out of Darkness is organised by the charity and CLASP and Bristol is one of several cities participating across the country. It will focus on promoting ‘mental health equality for all’ through information, awareness, suicide prevention and de-stigmatising mental ill-health.
Freedom of Mind, a mental wellbeing charity that hold an annual festival of the same name, are supporting this year’s Bristol event, which takes place on Saturday, September 8.

“‘Walking Out Of Darkness’ is not about one person, school or business,” says Freedom of Mind managing director Katie Finch. “It is a platform for people, services and everyone across local and regional communities to come together showing unity for people with mental ill-health disabilities to feel empowered, respectfully remembering people lost to suicide and prevent future suicides; because together we can all make a difference.”
Starting at Lloyds Amphitheatre, the walk will take its follow along the river and around Bristol landmarks at a relaxed pace.
“Walking out of Darkness promotes the need for us all to challenge stigma around mental health and better support anyone who is feeling alone and may want help,” says mayor Marvin Rees.

“It not only shows how important it is to openly talk about mental health but gives us the chance to highlight all the services available to those who need it.”
