My home, Lori Taylor-Arnold
Blogger Lori lives with husband Paul and their four-year-old son in a rented Georgian flat in Clifton
Clifton was the first place I moved to when I made the leap from London life in 2007. It feels like home. We moved to this flat in 2011: an empty shell full of potential with its two beautiful marble fireplaces and the original sash windows gracing every room. Like most Georgian houses, the ceiling height allows light to soak the room and it can accommodate a giant Christmas tree.
is needed now More than ever
When we first moved in, I spent weeks getting my son’s room just right. Late nights were spent painting walls, filling cracks, screen-printing pieces for the wall, and thinking of details to make this a special place to grow and learn. Recently, our happiest discovery in the flat was pulling up the most ugly carpet to reveal wonderful, original tiles, completely transforming the entrance to the building.
Home is a tricky idea for me to put into words. I moved around a lot as a child, never staying in one place for long. But having my own child has changed that. He craves stability, and I go through phases of wanting to put down roots and nesting at home contrasted with moments of wanting to travel the world and live out of a suitcase. I suppose I’ve never really grown out of those childhood dreams. But, for now, home is the place I lay my boy’s head.
There are so many great Bristol places to pick up beautiful objects, old and new. I love wandering along Gloucester Road looking for trinkets. My favourite shops are Dig Haushizzle, iota, Butlers for kitchenware, the antique and junk shops dotted around Clifton and Gloucester Road, plus I always head to Soma Gallery and newly-opened Papersmiths in Clifton Village for prints and inspiring magazines.
