Shared Ownership can give you the helping hand onto the property ladder, yet many do not know about it.

Karolina Davies, Yarlington’s Head of Home Ownership and Sales explains that Shared Ownership is a fantastic solution to own a share of your own home.

‘We have been researching our customers of the future, their needs and aspirations. Our upcoming generation of customers are aged between 16-37, typically known as millennials.

When asked what customers who don’t currently own would like in the future, they said they wanted to own. With 79% saying they wished to live in a home they own in the next 5-9 years and 89% within the next 10 years.

Looking at current statistics, that’s not so achievable. In the south west, the average income is £25,000 and the average house price is more than 10 times that! They want to buy but can’t afford to. The solution is Shared Ownership however, many don’t know about the scheme.’

Put simply, it allows you to own a share of your home and pay rent on the remaining share. You need a deposit as little as 5% of the share you are purchasing. So, if your share costs £75,000 that’s a deposit of just £3,750!

You purchase what you can afford of your home now and can always buy more when the time is right, all the way to 100% ownership in most cases. And the scheme is not just for first time buyers but for everyone who needs a helping hand on the housing ladder. You just need to check you are eligible and home ownership could be within your grasp.
