Teaching school children using film

By Katie Pothecary  Friday May 10, 2019

Four more years of funding have been awarded to the education charity, Into Film. Bristol, a UNESCO City of Film, is one of three participating cities in the Film for Learning project that aims to improve children’s literacy through film.

The Paul Hamlyn Foundation announced on the May 9 that they would fund another four years of Into Film. Set to be launched in May 2019, Film for Learning is an initiative rolled out over thirty schools, ten of which will be in Bristol.

Into Film’s aim is to improve young people’s participation and engagement in literacy by getting school staff to explore teaching with film. Throughout the Film for Learning project, students will be put at the heart of an exciting range of activities that engages them in learning and encourages them to take an active interest in the film industry as well.

Francesca Beers, senior leader of Easton CE Academy in Bristol notes how important chances to participate in projects such as Film for Learning are: “As a school that has developed a strong focus on good communication skills through our storytelling work, Film for Learning offers us a valuable opportunity to consolidate these approaches and further develop them in new and exciting ways”

Chief executive officer of Into Film,Paul Reeve, recognises the impact and value that this programme has on the community, saying: “We’re really looking forward to developing our programme further and to continue to have a positive impact on cross-curricular learning and literacy attainment with film.”
