Barbershop closes after more than 40 years
A barbers in Clifton that hit the national headlines for its owners’ resolutely traditional attitudes has closed after more than four decades.
Mr Swanton’s of Bruton Place in Clifton had a line on the floor reading: ‘No ladies beyond this line’.
The eponymous Phil Swanton ran the business with his wife, Kathryn, and always wore a waistcoat while at work.
is needed now More than ever
The window displays at the Victorian-style premises changed throughout the seasons and often marked special events.
A sign in the window underneath a hanging clock and lamp promised “hairdressing for gentlemen and their sons” which included hot towel shaves and friction singeing.

A statement in the window of the shop reads: “It is with great sadness that I write this. As you probably know by now, we are retiring…
“I would like to thank you for your custom and friendship during the last 43 years. We have so enjoyed it, the laughs, the stories, the jokes and mutual abuse, and not forgetting the cash!
“A big thank you once again. We will be in the area still and hope to see you around. Bon voyage!”
Mr Swanton has recommended that his customers transfer their allegiances to Louis Antonio at Cotham Hill Barbers on Cotham Hill, who he trained and who worked for him for several years.
“He has a great sense of humour and a cheeky side to him,” he wrote in a sign in a smaller sign on the door.
