Luxury African and Caribbean boutique opens in central Bristol

By Mia Vines Booth  Saturday Jan 7, 2023

A “luxury boutique” has opened in Broadmead, celebrating African Caribbean fashion and lifestyle brands.

Afro Street will showcase the work of emerging designers from across the UK from its shop in The Arcade.

The shop and e-commerce platform’s founder, Danny Duod, hopes the space will encourage more people to appreciate the wealth of African and Caribbean talent in the UK.

Danny, who now lives in Somerset but grew up in London, has worked in fashion and design for over 20 years, and has worked with AfroStreet Festival, an annual street fashion, art and heritage festival supporting youth engagement through creative expression.

“I’ve always had a vision to have a very beautiful space for high end and luxury African brands from across the UK,” he told Bristol24/7.

“Growing up in London, there were Selfridges and Harvey Nichols, but there was no space for us.”

Danny is currently showcasing the work of ten designers from across the UK on a short to long term basis, as well as his own Afro Streetwear brand, Duodu London.

“These brands are really doing beautiful work,” said Danny.

“I want a beautiful space where all walks of life can come in and find lifestyle products, from fashion, beverages, jewellery, cosmetics, home-wear, artworks and artefacts,” Danny gestured around the shop.

“You can find everything that you need here.”

When asked why he chose to set up shop in Bristol, Danny said: “Bristol is quite progressive in the cultural movement, it’s very multicultural.”

Danny chose The Arcade in Broadmead due to its luxurious design, which he said is modelled on the Burlington Arcade in Piccadilly.

He is also renovating the basement below the shop, which he hopes will act as a “modern Motown haven”, where people can connect with the community through workshops and events.

“There hasn’t been a space like this before in Bristol,” Danny told Bristol24/7 proudly.

Danny will be holding a launch event on Saturday, January 14, where the public can come and meet the designers. There will be DJs and alcoholic beverages as well as a selection of local suppliers.
