People from Bristol walk more than anywhere else in UK
People in Bristol walk more than anywhere else in the UK, according to a new study.
A survey conducted by walking charity Living Streets found that Bristol is the top UK city for walking, with over two in five people walking more than 20 minutes per day (43 per cent).
Bristol was closely followed by Sheffield and Cardiff.

The survey also found that “Going for a walk” is Bristol’s favourite Bank Holiday activity, as voted by over half of respondents (53 per cent).

This was closely followed by a “BBQ with friends/family” (36 per cent) and “Gardening” (34 per cent).
The popularity of walking in Bristol could be attributed to the number of parks in the city. There are over 400 parks and green spaces in Bristol, and these spaces were a lifeline for many during the pandemic.
The popularity of walking in Bristol could also be due to its small size, compared to other major cities.
According to data from the European Union, Bristol provides excellent access to public green areas, with 88 per cent of residents living within 300m of a green space, including 87 per cent of the inner-city population.
Despite the popularity of walking, the survey found that over a third of people in Bristol did wish they had a walking partner to beat feelings of loneliness.
Living Streets is inviting people to join their neighbours who live alone, or someone who lives far from family, to try #Try20, walking 20 minutes per day with them as part of National Walking Month.
To mark National Walking Month, Bristol Walk Fest launches on May 1 and runs until the end of the month, with over 200 walking events and activities taking place with options for all ages, interests and abilities.
