Bristol Textile Quarter launch
Bristol Textile Quarter (BTQ), a community interest company started last year by Emma Hague, is officially launching its new concept and makerspace today, at an event aimed at the city’s textile community
The aim of BTQ is for Bristolians to care as much about where their textiles originate from as their food. This is to be achieved by offering workspace, facilitating meaningful and productive networking and collaborations between textile creatives.
Emma Hague says: “For a city that has such a strong network of producers, growers, retailers and wholesalers who care about where our food comes from and who are all working to make Bristol a sustainable food city, it seems odd to me that we aren’t thinking and caring about where out textiles and clothes come from too. It’s missing from the conversation, and this year being Green Capital, couldn’t be a better time to start talking about it.
“BTQ want to build a responsible a community that wants to see more responsible, more resilient supply chains lay the foundations for our local textile economy. “
is needed now More than ever
The event launches Bristol’s newest makerspace, specifically aimed toward those who work with textiles and garments tonight from 16:45 until 21:00. The event is open to Bristol’s textile community, particularly those interested in workspace, workshops or simply in meeting other likeminded people.
Knitwear graduate Lydia W, Knitwear says: “There is little support for new designers/graduates especially in Bristol, everything seems to be in London which is getting more and more expensive. I think the idea of having variety of creative minds in one place is fantastic and I think that having the opportunity to talk to others and learn from one another is really important.”
Designer Rachel B says: “Space is a real issue when making that decision to start up a creative business. I have attempted to recreate a studio vibe in my home but it really limits me on a daily basis…there’s no space for a cutting table and I’m constantly crawling around the floor to get large pieces of work done!! If I had a place like this where I could go twice a week then it would considerably change my business structure and life to make my career feel more sustainable.”
