New giftware shop and print studio opens

By Lowie Trevena  Monday Apr 19, 2021

In what was most recently a St Peter’s Hospice charity shop is a new giftware store and print studio.

Nestled between a charity shop and an Indian restaurant on Cotham Hill, Fikkä Shop + Studio has been founded by Jake Pearce.

Jake, who lives in Temple Cloud in Somerset, opened the shop after working as a shop assistant as several years and is adding a studio space within the building.

Having studied graphic design at university, the 27-year-old is installing equipment such as a risograph printer and a letterpress machine and will let artists and designers hire desk space, hoping to have around six desk spaces once the space is finished.

“I chose Cotham because of its perfect location specially with the recent pedestrianisation of the street there’s a real community feel to the area,” says Jake, adding that the name Fikkä is also a new word.

“It’s based on the Swedish word fika, which roughly translates as a coffee/cake break but I changed the word into something unique. I’m a big fan of Scandinavian design and wanted a name that reflected that.”

Jake adds that opening during the pandemic has “actually been quite helpful”, saying: “It has given me the extra time to really plan the shop and find all the lovely products that I sell, and also given me more time to plan the shop fittings and layout without the pressure of needing to open soon as possible.”

Fikkä also sells online, as well as in person, and Jake has tried to make the space as eco-friendly as possible. As well as having the in-person shop and artist space, he has also set up an online store.

Selling everything from candles and cosmetics to children’s books, mugs and pencil cases, it’s an eclectic offering, and one Jake hopes will strike a chord with Cotham and the rest of the city.
