New shop opening: Tiger Lily

By Helen Martin  Wednesday Jan 21, 2015

New clothes and accessories shop Tigerlily opened on Gloucester Road this month. We caught up with Tiger Lily’s shipowner, Marj Cook

When did you open Tiger Lily?
I opened the store on Gloucester Road on January 10. I have another shop in Ludlow, South Shropshire, which is about to celebrate its 10th birthday.

Please describe your store
I sell a refreshing mix of stylish clothing by brands such as: Desigual from Spain and ethical labels: Skunkfunk, Komodo and Urbancode. In addition to this, I stock a large range of sterling silver and gemstone jewellery and unusual accessories from Matt & Nat (vegan leather brand), Urbancode (leather bags and faux fur), plus other carefully selected products. These ranges are popular with all ages. Many are particularly familiar with the quirky and colourful designs by Desigual – and I’m now apparently the only stockist in Bristol!

What inspired you to open Tiger Lily?
My inspiration for Tiger Lily came from years of travelling around the world and exploring the beautiful treasures found in the exotic souks and markets. I started my business over 20 years ago by selling jewellery at markets and festivals and eventually opened my first shop in Ludlow, in 2005.

How are you finding being situated on Gloucester Road, a vibrantly independent stretch of Bristol?
Having moved to Bristol only five months ago, Gloucester Road was the obvious choice for a second shop due to its diverse demographic and creative edge. Furthermore it feels great to be part of such a fantastic hub of independent shops and friendly community.

Where do you source your stock?
My products are sourced from carefully selected suppliers both in the UK and abroad. Many of the products are ethical brands.

What were you doing before running your business?
Apart from retailing I have worked as an EFL teacher and am a trained Yoga teacher (adults and children).

What’s the future for Tiger Lily?
With opening the second store and developing the website further, the future for Tiger Lily feels very exciting!
